Year 1

Class Teacher: Miss Plank

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Jervis and Miss Widdows

We are very excited to welcome you to Year 1!

In Year 1, we are very lucky to be able to learn through both teacher-led activities and continuous provision, which is based around the National Curriculum. We have an indoor and outdoor space that is equipped with resources for the children to access independently, giving them the opportunity to develop their communication skills, determination, resilience and creativity. It is amazing what their imagination creates! They have the opportunity to embed and extend what they have learnt during whole-class teaching and small group work during their independent learning time. They have a lot of fun together!

  • Bring your reading book and green reading diary to school every day, put it in the basket each morning.
  • Wear your PE kit to school on a Friday for your PE lesson.
  • Bring a water bottle to keep in class.

This half-term's learning:

Writing

A variety of inspiring stories will support the teaching of literacy this term. Children will learn to explore a range of different texts, including Pinocchio, The way back home and the poem 'Firework night'.

Children will identify the main characters and explore the settings and events in the stories, gaining an understanding of different story features. There will be a focus on applying punctuation accurately and with some independence. They will use their developing phonic knowledge to compose and write simple sentences independently to communicate meaning, and write most letters, correctly formed and orientated.

Phonics and Reading

St Saviour's follows the 'Little Wandle' programme for phonics and reading. We work really hard in Year 1 to recognise graphemes and then blend them together to read words. We can then read lots of different books from our class reading corner or the school library. We also apply what we know to spell lots of new words! We have the phonics screening check during the summer term.
