Year 1

Class Teacher: Miss Plank

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Jervis, Miss Widdows

and Mrs Johnson

We are very excited to welcome you to Year 1!

In Year 1, we are very lucky to be able to learn through both teacher-led activities and continuous provision, which is based around the National Curriculum. We have an indoor and outdoor space that is equipped with resources for the children to access independently, giving them the opportunity to develop their communication skills, determination, resilience and creativity. It is amazing what their imagination creates! The children have the opportunity to embed and extend what they have learnt during whole-class teaching and small group work during their independent learning time. We have a lot of fun together!

  • Wear your PE kit to school on a Wednesday for your PE lesson.
  • Bring a water bottle to keep in class.

This half-term's learning:

Writing

A variety of inspiring stories will support the teaching of writing this term. Children will learn to explore a range of different texts, including 'The Queen's Hat' and 'Grandad's Island'.

Children will identify the main characters and explore the settings and events in the stories, gaining an understanding of different story features. There will be a focus on applying punctuation accurately and with some independence. They will use their developing phonic knowledge to compose and write simple sentences independently to communicate meaning, and write most letters, correctly formed and orientated.

Phonics and Reading

St Saviour's follows the 'Little Wandle' programme for phonics and reading. We work really hard in Year 1 to recognise graphemes and then blend them together to read words. We can then read lots of different books from our class reading corner or the school library. We also apply what we know to spell lots of new words! We have the phonics screening check during the summer term.

Here are some maths games to enjoy at home:

Counting, matching and ordering

Mental maths train

Religious Education

In our RE lessons this half-term, our unit is called 'Galilee to Jerusalem'. We will begin by looking at Jesus presentation at the temple and how this is celebrated at Candlemas. We will also look at when Jesus was lost in the temple, when He chose His disciples and announced His mission, thinking about how we can continue this mission.

Our science topic this half-term is all about 'Everyday materials'. We will be looking at the common materials around us, what we use them for and their properties. We will also perform a simple test on some materials to see which ones are waterproof.

History

This half-term we will be learning all about queens, understanding their roles and about some important queens in particular, including Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.

Design and Technology

In our design and technology lessons, we will be designing, making and evaluating a fruit salad, learning how to safely cut the fruit and arrange it in an appetising way.

PSHE

We will exploring the 'My happy mind' topic of 'appreciate', where we will recognise some of the amazing things we have to be grateful for, and know how to show our appreciation for these things.
