Year 1

Class Teacher: Miss Plank
Teaching Assistants: Mrs Jervis, Miss Widdows
and Mrs Johnson
We are very excited to welcome you to Year 1!
In Year 1, we are very lucky to be able to learn through both teacher-led activities and continuous provision, which is based around the National Curriculum. We have an indoor and outdoor space that is equipped with resources for the children to access independently, giving them the opportunity to develop their communication skills, determination, resilience and creativity. It is amazing what their imagination creates! The children have the opportunity to embed and extend what they have learnt during whole-class teaching and small group work during their independent learning time. We have a lot of fun together!

This half-term's learning:
Writing
A variety of inspiring stories will support the teaching of writing this term. Children will continue to explore the story 'Grandad's Island'. We will also write a recount of our trip to the woods.
Children will identify the main characters and explore the settings and events in the stories, gaining an understanding of different story features. There will be a focus on applying punctuation accurately and with some independence. They will use their developing phonic knowledge to compose and write simple sentences independently to communicate meaning, and write most letters, correctly formed and orientated.

Phonics and Reading
St Saviour's follows the 'Little Wandle' programme for phonics and reading. We work really hard in Year 1 to recognise graphemes and then blend them together to read words. We can then read lots of different books from our class reading corner or the school library. We also apply what we know to spell lots of new words! We have the phonics screening check during the summer term.
Please see the link below to our phonics and reading pages:
Mathematics
During maths this term, Year 1 will be developing their knowledge of place value within 20, and then within 50. We will extend our addition and subtraction skills to within 20 too. We will also explore measures, including height, length, mass and volume.
Here are some maths games to enjoy at home:

Match the numerals to the values and words

Religious Education
In our RE lessons this half-term, our unit is called 'From desert to garden'. We will begin by looking at Jesus' time in the desert and how he refused temptation. We will look at how we remember this time through lent and in preparation for Easter. We will then explore the Easter story, from Jesus entering Jerusalem to Him rising again on Easter Sunday.
Science
Our science topic this half-term is all about plants. We will be looking at the different parts of a plant. We will also be identifying common wild and garden plants and flowers, as well as deciduous and evergreen trees. We will find out how some fruit and vegetables grow too.
Geography
This half-term we will be learning all about the United Kingdom. We will find out which countries are in the UK and how their flags create the Union Jack. We will also be finding out more about the countries in the UK, what their capital cities are and what the landscape is like.
Art
In our art lessons, we will be exploring the work of Yayoi Kusama. She creates artwork and sculptures inspired by dots! We will be creating our own sculptures inspired by her art and installations.
